BOO!

The kids love making little books that they can read.  After finishing our books they took turns reading their books to a buddy.

Bat Addition

During math today the kids played "Bat Addition". They rolled two dice, wrote the addition problem on their sheet and then covered up the answer on their game board.

Kindergarten Research

Iowa Core includes a research component for every grade level.  We decided to do some research on bats.  We started by thinking of things we know (or think we know) about bats. (schema) Then we read informational books about bats. We found that our schema about bats was great and we also learned new things that we could list.
We are working on our own book "All About Bats" that we will share at conference time.

More Text to Self Connections....

The kids love the book "Skeleton Hiccups" so we did a text to self activity about
how they would get rid of hiccups.  We made a list of ideas from the book and ideas of their own. Their skeletons are so cute!
Look in a mirror and scare yourself.

Too Many Pumpkins

We read a great book called "Too Many Pumpkins". We learned that adjectives are words we use to describe.  We made a big list of pumpkin adjectives, thinking about different ways to describe the inside and the outside of a pumpkin. They came up with awesome words!
We have also been working on sequencing and retelling. The kids colored pictures of a pumpkin life cycle and then put them in order, in a booklet.  They put a title on the cover and did their own illustration.  We used the the sight words "I see the" to write sentences inside our books.  The last page was for an illustration of their own jack-o-lantern. They had a great time reading them to me when they were done!

Coins

The kids are learning to recognize pennies, nickels and dimes.  They played a dice/coin matching game.

Text to Self Connections...

We have been learning about text to self connections during our literacy mini lessons. ( A text to self connections is when a book that you read reminds you of something in your own life.) We read the book "The Very Busy Spider" by Eric Carle.  We made our own spiders and the kids wrote how they are very busy.

Symmetry

Our math lesson for today was about symmetry. We learned that to have symmetry, both sides of your object need to look exactly the same. We used paint to make our own symmetry pictures.

Race Around Webster Fun!

The kids had a great time on Thursday! What a great event!
